Grant Christie (Director of Itchyfeet SA)

Grant Christie

Director of Itchyfeet SA

Grant will be a Keynote Speaker at the Gala dinner. He is a man with a (possibly unhealthy) obsession with walking. He is that friend who always says, “We don’t need an uber, we can just walk.” In fact, his escape plan from his civil engineering career was to walk the entire coastline of South Africa. Grant has always been an avid sportsman and a nature enthusiast, but it was this eight month, 3 500 km expedition that served as his springboard into the outdoor world. After his coastal expedition Grant worked at an adventure centre for a year before moving into the freelance space. He has led school expeditions and corporate challenges around the globe. Locally Grant guides mountain and nature trips and facilitates school Journeys. Most recently Grant completed a 500km fundraising walk around the Greater Kruger and Panorama route during the 2020 lockdown. This year Grant has joined local guiding and tour operator Itchyfeet SA as a co-director. When Grant is not walking or planning walks he takes photographs, writes the odd feature article, chases birds, stares at stars, and strums his guitar.

John has led small specialised technical teams as well as large operational teams. He considers leadership as a critical operational and business success factor. His focus on optimising asset contribution to levels of service is born out of experience and single-point accountability based on integrating asset performance with business drivers and facilitating informed decision making. His work on asset whole-of-life performance resulted from being the “operator” and recipient of infrastructure, commissioned and handed over from the design and construct teams. This frequently resulted in what has been defined as “Value Leakage” and led him to deeper involvement in driving a more holistic approach to managing assets across all lifecycle phases, based on total lifecycle performance and cost of ownership. John now leads training courses across the globe and has published professional papers on Leadership, Service Levels, Asset Management, Leading Successful Change and Outsourcing/Privatisation of Public Sector Assets.
